Bhim Singh is a multidimensional personality. A relentless fighter for justice and equity, an intellectual, a jurist, an international investigative journalist, a statesman, a film maker, a humanist playing the role of a person with profound interest in, and concern for human welfare, values and dignity and, above all, a distinguished humanitarian-pursuing ethical and theological humanitarianism. An undaunted social activist and champion of public interest and civil rights of all human beings irrespective of their race, religion, region or nationality.
Hails from the Backward (declared) village, Bhugterian, family of Dogra Rajputs in the Himalayan region who under the leadership of Zorawar Singh (1836-42) and General Baaz Singh extended the boundaries of Jammu and Kashmir to the Central Asian region, Gilgit-Baltistan and Ladakh touching Kailash (Mansarover) in Tibet. His ancestors were buried alive by the tyrant rulers under the foundation of the Chanotras Fort, Ramnagar 250 years back, came to be known as ‘Chanotras’ (Chosen).
Married to a journalist and has one son who is a poet. A promising Artist of international repute.

 

 Globe Trotter

Bhim Singh is the first person to cross Sahara (Desert) on motorcycle in 1971, traveled almost the whole world on motorcycle on Peace Mission (1967-1972). Traveled through more than 150 countries. Addressed 150 Universities in Africa, Asia, Middle-East, Europe, Latin AmAround The World On Motorcycleerica, North America and Europe, South East Asia and the USSR. He was closely associated with PLO and remained fast friend of Palestine President Mr. Yasir Arafat. Almost every television, radio, newspaper carried the stories of his world peace mission and adventures–His book on his travels, ‘Peace Mission, Around the World on Motorcycle’ in English, Hindi & Urdu are available in world markets.
He crossed Western Sahara (Desert) on motorcycle in 20 days in 1971 (Morocco to Senegal via Spanish Sahara and Mauritania). He was, perhaps, the first Indian to cross Siberia (USSR) through Moscow-Vladivostok in (Trans-Siberian Railways) and then crossing to Japan by a boat in 1972. Traveled in the Arab-world dozen times.

Turbulent Student Life

Bhim Singh During Student LifeLed the students and the youth movement from 1959 to 1980, against the suppression and oppression of the power that be in Jammu and Kashmir. Opposed the mighty corrupt rulers and toppled their dictatorial regimes. He passed most of his exams from behind the bars. He was first arrested in 1953, while a student of sixth class, for defying Sheikh Mohd. Abdullah, Prime Minister of J&K. He led student movement in 1966 for the creation of University in Jammu.

 

 

 Jails

Bhim Singh as a student leader suffered untold jail-tortures and detentions under the States Draconian Laws. He was detained 54 times from 1958 to 2002. He spent more than eight years in prisons as a political prisoner. Out of 10 years of his tenure as a legislator, he was detained for three and a half years by the Government. He was even imprisoned and poisoned in the Central Jail Srinagar in 1979 by Sheikh Mohd. Abdullah’s government. Several attempts were made on his life by the state agencies and the state police which resulted in fracturing his leg in 1985. He is the only freedom fighter who suffered the cruelties and punishments in the prisons under the rule of every Chief Minister/Prime Minister of J&K from 1953 to 2002. He was detained in the stinking cells of Central Jail Jammu, Central Jail Srinagar, Tihar Jail Delhi, Special Jail Canal Road, Jammu (which was built for Sheikh Abdullah), Kathua, Hiranagar, Bhaderwah, Reasi and Aligarh.


Rashtra Chetna Abhiyan

An epoch-making event he created in history by leading first ever Rashtra Chetna Yatra from Kargil (Ladakh) to Kanyakumari on the eve of 21st century and then from Kanyakumari to Jammu and Kashmir in 64 days. This was the first Yatra in the 20th century from Ladakh to Kanyakumari and first in 21st century from Kanyakumari to Jammu and Kashmir. Awakening Chetna for love, fraternity, unity, peace, brotherhood, disarmament.

Initiator of PIL movement in J&K & Human Rights Activist

It was through PIL that he got relief to thousands of employees, working class, trade unions, farmers, landless and houseless persons in J&K and elsewhere. He initiated the process of Public Interest Litigation in J&K against state’s oppression on the weaker sections, the employees, the farmers, the students and others. Has secured relief from the High Courts and the Supreme Court to hundreds of the affected and the helpless persons by providing them free legal aid and assistance mostly in Punjab and J&K. He fought in the High Courts and the Supreme Court for several Hurriyat Conference leaders including, M/s. Ali Shah Gilani, Abdul Gani Lone, Shabnam Lone, Shabir Shah, Abdul Gani Bhat, Ali Mohd. Sagar of National Conference. Of course, free of charges. He sought relief to the Jammu Migrants through the Supreme Court, saving thousands of migrants from death and starvation

His own case in the Supreme Court (1985, Vol. 4-Page 677) is a landmark judgment in the legal history of Human Rights and a revolutionary development in the Law of Torts.
“The Supreme Court of India (Apex Court) in its unique judgment directed Govt. of J&K to pay a compensation of Rs.50,000/- to Prof. Bhim Singh for his wrongful and illegal detention by preventing him to attend Assembly Session in 1985. It gave a new dimension in the Law of Torts in India”. He has secured relief to hundreds of POK, Pakistan, Afghanistan and other prisoners who were languishing in the Indian jails for decades.

He possesses rare courage and determination and wherever he is convinced of the truth of the cause espoused by him, he fights with great determination and vigour even at the cost of his personal safety and security.

A Journalist

He is founder Editor-in-Chief (Hony.) of the ‘The Voice of Millions’, a fearless weekly published from New Delhi since 1975. He has authored a number of articles on International Law and other contemporary political and social issues. He was the editor of ‘The Sennet’, a Journal of London University Students Union, 1970-71. He edited the Youth Congress Publications, ‘Young March’ and ‘Yuva Pragati’ from 1974 to 1976. He is the Director (Hony.) of VOM TV Network which has produced unique films on, The Gulf War and West Asia, Palestine, Jerusalem, Al-Aqsa, Karbala, Bethlehem, Return of Doda Migrants, Babri-Masjid, etc. He interviewed for Doordarshan several leading world personalities including UN Secretary General, Dr. Boutros Boutros Ghali, Mr. Yasir Arafat, President of Palestine, Mr. Elias Harawi, President of Lebanon, Mr. Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel, Crown Prince of Jordan, Mr. Hassan Bin Talat, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, Mr. Morarjee Desai, Sarhadi Gandhi, Abdul Gafar Khan, Mr. Saddam Hussein, President of Iraq, Mrs. Bandarnaike, several Arab and Asian leaders.
He is contributing write-ups on the National and International Affairs in the leading Indian papers including; The Hindustan Times, Times of India, The Tribune, The Hindu, Navbharat Times, Punjab Kesri, Free Press Journal, Dharam Yug and for journals in UK, USA and Arab countries.

Education

School education he received in Nagrota school (5 kms. on foot) from his village. He passed matriculation from High School Ramnagar. Graduated in Sciences from J&K University in 1963. Passed out M.A. & LL.B from Aligarh Muslim University in 1966. Barrister-at-Law from Lincoln’s Inn (UK) and LL.M from the London University with distinction in the Constitutional and International Law in 1971.  He was conferred Doctorate in International Law (Palestine). Recently, he was awarded honourary degree of Doctorate for his recent book, ‘The Judgement’ NATO Aggression Against Yugoslavia. Proposes to establish an International Peace University in J&K ‘Vedic University’ to generate Peace Commandos for complete disarmament and peace.

A Teacher

In the formative years of his career, started teaching career in U.K.and later taught Constitutional Law as a lecturer in Jammu University (1973-74). He also taught at Law Institute at the Delhi as a Assistant Professor in International Law (1975-76). He was a visiting Professor to the Aligarh Muslim University and its Legal Advisor. He was a Member of the Executive Council of Kurukshetra University. In Jammu he taught in the light candles school, in the Presentation Convent, Jammu.

Peace-loving Revolutionary

Founder of the J&K National Panthers Party which he founded in March 1982 to eliminate corruption and seek justice for all. Headed several students and youth organisations in J&K, Aligarh Muslim University and at the National and the International level. Founder President of J&K Students Congress (1963-67),  Got appointed by Mrs. Indira Gandhi as Secretary National Legal Aid Committee (AICC) (1975-77),  General Secretary AICC(U), (1980-82), President of State Youth Congress-J&K as was appointed on the direction of Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India (1973-74), Secretary-General (International Relations) of IYC (1974-76), Vice-President of Indian Youth Congress (1977-78) with Shri P.R. Dasmunsi, President. MLA in the J&K Assembly from 1977 to 1987 from Chenani-Ghordi (Udhampur).
Won election in Lok Sabha by-election from Udhampur (J&K) in 1988 by a margin of 32,000 votes but declared defeated by Congress-NC rulers. The High Court quashed election of Congress candidate Prof. Bhim Singh failed to enter the Lok Sabha as the then Parliament was dissolved, the day judgment of  Justice K.K.Gupta of J&K High Court was delivered.

He led several delegations to the UN Headquarters (NGO) to actively participate in the deliberations of NGO Conferences on Human Rights, Disarmament and Global Peace. His deliberations at Geneva, Vienna, London, Brussels, Kathmandu, New York, Casablanca, Baghdad, Cairo and other places have made a tremendous impact on strengthening international understanding on J&K situation. He is the first one to sow the seeds of family ties among the leaders and intellectuals of J&K from both sides of the ceasefire-line after 50 years of split.

Publications & Films

 Specialized on Palestine and the West Asian conflict. Has done commendable research work which was later documented into a book titled, ‘An Examination of documents on which the State of Israel is based’, which is a milestone in the field of International Law. His world famous publications are, ‘Flames in Kashmir’ (English), Sulgata Kashmir (Hindi), Sada-e-Jammu and Kashmir (Urdu), ‘Kashmir, A Mirage’. His book on the NATO Aggression against Yugoslavia, ‘The Judgement’, which was released in Belgrade for President Milosevic in 1991 has already been translated in Serbian language. His latest book, ‘Kashmir, A Mirage’ was released by the former Maharaja of J&K Dr. Karan Singh, Former Chief Justice Mr. P.N. Bhagwati (Chairman, UN Human Rights Committee in Geneva)–released his latest book, ‘Autonomy or Secession’ in Kashmir.  His latest books are, ‘Iraq–A Heroic Resistance’, ‘Murder of Democracy’ in J&K. His Hindi book, ‘Chetna Yatra, Kargil Se Kanyakumari’ has produced third edition.  It was released by Mr. Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, the Hon’ble Vice President  of India. ‘Peace Mission, Around the World on Motorcycle’ in English, Hindi and Urdu and ‘The Blunders & Way Out, J&K’.
